An Amazing Effort to Fill Empty Plates
On a sunny Sunday in Newcastle witnessed an extraordinary display of determination and community spirit from a group of six runners who embarked on completing the A.J. Bell Great North Run 2023 for their local Food Pantry.
Our team consisted of one dedicated member of staff and one Director of the Board from Phoenix Enterprise Centre in Cleator Moor, along with four close friends, all on a mission to raise funds for the local Food Pantry, a lifeline for some residents in Copeland. With every step taken their aim was to fill their local Food Pantry’s shelves and provide vital support to their local community.
Setting a challenging target of £300 per six participants, a total of £1,800, our runners joined a vibrant community of around 57,000 like-minded individuals. Everyone lacing up their sneakers to support a variety of amazing causes. The atmosphere was electric, with a shared sense of purpose coursing through the crowd.
Despite the scorching sun, the weather had a finishing surprise in store for everyone taking part. At around 3:30 p.m., a sudden and unexpected torrential downpour drenched the runners as they neared the finishing line. This didn’t dampen their spirits even if it DID take a further six and half hours before their return to Cleator Moor, they were elated, exhausted and just happy to all have completed.
Leading the charge for our group was Lynsey Smith, who blazed through the 13.1-mile course in an impressive 1 hour, 46 minutes, and 20 seconds. A feat she believes she can surpass in the future, setting her sights on an even faster time.

The true measure of their success lies in their fundraising efforts. The generosity from individuals, organisations and local businesses. PEC’s Food Pantry runners managed to secure an incredible £2,925 in donations, exceeding their set target by more than £1,000. Their dedication and determination will help to keep the Food Pantry shelves well-stocked over the winter.
This incredible journey showcased the power of individuals coming together, pushing their limits, and making a meaningful impact on their community.
